February 2024 News: Exciting Shoreline Greenway Trail News; State Street Re-Design & Phase IV Updates; CT Trail Census; Rock to Rock

image

Dear Friend of the Farmington Canal Greenway,

We wanted to wish you a happy (almost-) springtime and provide you with a few important updates:

* Shoreline Greenway Trail Information Session, February 29, 6pm (Virtual)

image

The City of New Haven is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, February 29th to discuss plans for the New Haven portion of the Shoreline Greenway Trail, which the City of New Haven has received $9 million since December 2022 to complete. It will connect the current terminus of the Shoreline Greenway Trail in East Haven with the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and East Coast Greenway in the Long Wharf area. This is a big deal for regional trail connectivity and we are very excited about the project. There will also be an upcoming opportunity to walk (or bike) the future route of the SGT in New Haven, see below.

Register Here for the SGT Virtual Public Meeting - Feb 29th at 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

* Walk the Route of the Future Shoreline Greenway Trail Extension in New Haven, March 23, 9:30am

image

The walk will be led by longtime advocate of a harborside trail, Chris Ozyck, along with Aaron Goode of NHFFCG and the Bioregional Group and Dan Buckley, Matt Lieber, and Doug Hausladen from the Shoreline Greenway Trail organization.

The walk will begin at Lighthouse Point Park at 9:30am. There will be an option for people wishing to do a shorter walk to join the group later at Eastshore Park. More details TBA.

RSVP here

* State Street Re-Design Project Breaks Ground

This month ground was officially broken on the long-awaited State Street re-design and road diet project. This is part of a larger project that will include the pedestrianization of the entire east side of the State Street median, which will then serve as the route of the Farmington Canal and East Coast Greenway as these greenways traverse downtown New Haven. (More background here.) We strongly support this project which will have positive impacts on traffic safety and positive synergies with the Farmington Canal and regional trail connectivity more broadly.

* Phase IV Construction Update - Almost Finished!

image

Please follow our social media for additional updates on Phase IV.

* Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride, April 27

image

New Haven’s premier environmental fundraising event, Rock to Rock, is celebrating its 16th Annual event on April 27 and registration is now open! Pick from one of six thrilling routes: 2 family rides (1-mile flat, 5-mile-summit); 12-mile; 20-mile; 40-mile; and the metric century, plus park walks! All rides will begin and end in East Rock Park (College Woods) where there is a Kids Bike Rodeo and a Green Fair with live music and food carts.

After you register, you get to choose which Rock to Rock partner organization you want to support. Please consider selecting our partners Farmington Canal Rail-to-Trail Association or Community Placemaking and Engagement Network (CPEN) as one of the organizations you are supporting. Thank you!

We sincerely hope you can join us for the Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride!

* CT Trail Census - Get Involved with this Awesome Data Project!

We are really glad to be participating in the CT Trail Census again this year, as we have since 2017. Participating in this research project provides us really valuable data about trail usage in New Haven and across the state. Last year our infrared counters showed that there were over 150,000 trips taken on the trail in New Haven, and the trendline continues to go up, up, up! We need help this year with collecting manual count forms that enable us to calibrate our infrared sensors. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out with this fascinating and useful project – we really need help completing some manual counts to make sure our infrared counter is calibrated correctly!

We need help this year with collecting manual count forms that enable us to calibrate our infrared sensors. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out with this fascinating and useful project – we really need help completing some manual counts to make sure our infrared counter is calibrated correctly!

* PHASE IV CONSTRUCTION UPDATE – ALMOST FINISHED!

[This was in our October newsletter but we are re-sending in case you missed it.]

We try to provide periodic updates on the progress of “Phase IV,” i.e. the new section of trail in downtown New Haven that began construction in 2021, as new information becomes available.

Recently we were able to take a very interesting and informative behind-the-scenes tour of Phase IV where we were able to go inside the railroad tunnel, walk on the ramp at the southern end, and see the construction up close. The Phase IV below-grade section is now entirely paved and the ramp up to Grove Street is basically complete. There are a number of small (but significant) “finishing touches” that still need to be installed, including the historic markers, lighting fixtures, and landscaping materials. According to the engineers and construction officials on the site, we are still about 3 months out from the end of the project. Therefore we are hoping for a completion date by the end of 2023. We will do everything we can to ensure that all trail supporters, and everyone who has advocated for the project over many years, are invited to the ribbon-cutting. Still have questions? Let us know.

image

Thank you for your patience as this lengthy project has progressed! Believe me, we are just as eager for the project to be done as you are.

Please follow our social media for additional updates on Phase IV.

May 2023 News: Bike to Work Day Breakfast; CT Trails Day Events; Weekly Work-Days Beginning in June

image

Dear Friend of the Farmington Canal Greenway,

We wanted to wish you a happy National Bike Month and provide you with a few important updates:

* Bike to Work Day Breakfast, May 19, 7:30-9:30am @ Farmington Canal Trail and Sachem Street (near Yale Health Building)

image

We will be joining partner organizations like New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation and New Haven Bike Month for a celebration of National Bike to Work Day on the Farmington Canal Trail near Sachem Street. Join us for free refreshments and conversation. We will have trail maps available and be able to provide updates on Phase IV construction and other trail news. Free and open to all.

* CT Trails Day Events, June 3

image

We have a couple exciting events to offer you for Trails Weekend. One is a “Walk the Locks” in Hamden between the restored lock-keeper’s house at Lock 14 in Hamden and the restored Lock 12 in Cheshire. Park at the restored Keeper’s House at Lock 14 in Hamden, where you can view a history display by the Hamden Historical Society on the former canal and railroad, obtain refreshment from local hosts who are knowledgeable about the trail, and enjoy air conditioning and indoor bathrooms. Walk (or bike or blade) 3 miles north to Lock 12 in Cheshire, where an outdoor display shows how the lock system on the canal worked. This adventure is self-guided (the trail is paved, with a stone dust path on the side; it is flat and smooth, with some road crossings). It is six miles round-trip or you can arrange your own shuttle at the Lock 14 Keeper’s House. You can also just stay at the Lock Keeper’s House, which is located just off Whitney Avenue/Route 10 across the street from the Sleeping Giant golf course and Aunt Chilada’s restaurant. Sign up here.

Alternatively, you can join us at the Learning Corridor (Hazel/Shelton in Newhallville) for a short family-friendly guided stroll on the Farmington Canal. We will also have bikes available for loan, and the Urbanscapes Native Plant Nursery will be open for tours and plant sales. This event will be happening from 10am to 12:30pm.

* Trail Work-Days Beginning in June, Every Thursday 5:30-7pm at the Learning Corridor

* Farmington Canal Phase IV Construction Update

[This was in our last newsletter – we are including it again here in case you missed it.] City officials have recently informed us that construction of the new downtown segment of trail (known as “Phase IV”) has fallen a bit behind schedule and is currently scheduled for completion in Fall 2023. Because of provisions in the construction easement agreements with adjoining property owners, construction work behind Audubon Street is restricted during summer months because of summer camps that take place at the arts organizations located there. Unless the project is fully completed before June, which we had hoped, work in certain areas will have to stop and then resume later in the year. Obviously we’d hoped and anticipated to see Phase IV open this spring – still, we are glad to see the construction continuing to move ahead. Please make sure you are on our email list and follow us on social media for further updates. If you’re connected with us, we will also make sure you are notified about the ribbon-cutting event this fall.

Dear Friend of the Farmington Canal Greenway,

We wanted to wish you a happy new year and provide you with a few important updates:

* Advocate For Important Trails Legislation, Monday, January 30

image

Next Monday will be an important day for trails advocates as there are two important legislative proposals being considered in public hearings at the Connecticut General Assembly:

Environment Committee: HB 6482 authorizes bond funding for bikeways, greenways and recreational trails

Please consider writing or testifying in support of the same level of funding support as last year. The public hearing begins at 10am – you can sign up to testify or written testimony can be sent via the committee website here.

Transportation Committee: Vision Zero Recommendations [HB 5917]

The CT Vision Zero Council has made a number of important recommendations, including a clarification of the statutory language regarding acquisition of land for trails and greenways. This is a small but critically important change in order to be able to complete the FCHT and other multi-use trail projects.

The public hearing will begin at 9am – you can sign up to testify in person or on Zoom, and written testimony can be submitted in advance through the committee website here.

December 2022 News: Phase IV Update; Year-in-Review Summary

image

Dear Friend of the Farmington Canal Greenway,

We hope you are enjoying a great holiday season with friends and family! We wanted to provide a brief update about the progress of Phase IV and give a year-in-review summary. There is also some information at the end of this newsletter about how you can financially support our work in 2023 and beyond.

* Phase IV Status Update

image

We had a productive and informative meeting last week with City officials about the progress of construction on Phase IV. The project has fallen a little behind schedule due to various factors but it is coming along and should be completed by April or May 2023, in time for spring and summer. We will, of course, keep you updated about the progress on Phase IV and will let you know when the ribbon-cutting celebration is scheduled to take place.

* Year In Review - Thank You For a Banner Year!

We had a very busy year celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Farmington Canal with a number of different commemorative events, along with our usual full schedule of clean-ups, walking tours, bike rides, and other activities.

Below is a visual gallery of some of the year’s highlights.

image
image

[In May we threw a party for the 200th birthday of the Canal’s founding – which also coincided with National Bike to Work Day. The custom-made canal cake was delicious.]

image
image

[In June we led a history walking tour of the trail for the Arts & Ideas Festival.]

image

[In October we organized a fall foliage bike ride along the trail. We enjoyed seeing lots of new faces!]

image

[In November we partnered with Elm City Cycling on a “Ride Safe Ride Bright” free bike light giveaway at the Learning Corridor to keep everyone safe while riding at night.]
